anthony gonzalez blew most everybody’s socks off with hurry up, we’re dreaming, his sixth and double album released this fall. for those of you in the know, epic doesn’t even begin to describe it, but it’s a start. it’s rare to have a complete work of music floor you from beginning to end, so it’s no surprise it’s made practically everyone’s ‘best of’ lists, including ours. if you have hesitated for any reason to get this album, put some ants in your pants and hurry up. www.ilovem83.com

the dears

the canadian collective, headed by the dramatic murray lightburn, has seen their fair share of musicians come and go over the years, but their new album, degeneration street, with returning members from missiles, shows how drama can be brushed under the table and awesome music can still be made. the band’s fifth album is classic dears, powerful and orchestral. it’s a home run and quite the return. the album is out this tuesday and it’s a must must have. yes, two musts. www.thedears.org

beach house

this baltimore duo have, hands down, my favorite album of 2010. they are on the top of everyone’s best of 2010 list and it’s well deserved. teen dream is their third album released last january and 12 months later, i’m still listening to it on constant rotation. it never gets old and always gets better. they absolutely hit a home run with the album this past year and created something timeless and special.

girl talk

the king of the mash up released a new album, all day, this month without a heads, and to the bliss of all his fans, he released it fo freeee on his site illegal art. the pittsburgh sample genius really hit a home run with this one. it is 71 minutes of back to back undeniable fun and if anyone doesn’t find themselves grinning at any given moment during this album, then allow me to take that stick from out yo ass. it’s his fifth album and maybe his most complex. we can be music snobs all we want, but the boy can jam up a dance pawty real good.

small black

these four dudes from brooklyn released their debut album last week. i have been anticipating this album since their first ep last year and the album does not disappoint. it’s new wave meets shoegaze meets chillwave meets your fuzzy synthesizer on a lo-fi pop high. it’s a very gratifying album with some real genuine gems and i’ve been listening to it non-stop and feeling all the better for it. their cover of best coast’s “sun was high (so was i)” is a particular favorite of mine. the video for “photojournalist” below is an unofficial video made a first time filmmaker who does a good job of serving the song. www.myspace.com/smallblacksounds

how to dress well – love remains

who woulda thunk that someday someone was gonna take r&b and kill it by making it lo-fi? and by kill it, i mean take off its silk panties one inch at a time and really, truly bring sexy back. brooklyn’s tom krell is the someone i’m talkin bout. i can’t make out half the words he’s saying sometimes, but the haunting, distorted, yet gorgeous music speaks volumes enough and married to the bumpin and grindin beats, it’s one of my favorite releases all year. i have been ending the day pretty consistently with his stunning debut album. and boy, he kills me with that falsetto every friggin time. www.myspace.com/howtodresswellmusic

sufjan stevens

it had been five years since the detroit native released a new album. then a couple of weeks ago, he shocked us all by spontaneously releasing a new digital ep, all the delighted people. and then last week, announced he’ll be releasing a new full length, the age of adz, in october. the shock factor coupled with the new album announcement is quite the marketing strategy. all the delighted people is a substantial and heavy ep but worth every second, especially when it is a reminder that his full length is just around the corner. as a long time fan, the new music in hand and the promise of more new music coming soon from this genius has made the month all that more tolerable.

future islands

these baltimore boys have been touring up a storm to promote their latest album, in the evening air and they are kiiiiling it. this album is so motherf*in good, it puts any naysayers to shame. the album is what the boys in the band call “post-wave” and it’s a pretty darn accurate description of the tunage, new wave meets post-punk in a beautiful marriage of whimsical and heartfelt emotion. the album is solid to say the least and worthy of a listen if you have been living under an indie rock. pun intended.

lcd soundsystem

james murphy has done it again and maybe for the last time, if in fact this is happening is his last album. this month, artist props of the month was a no brainer. if you have listened to the latest lcd soundsystem gem, then you know, the man has pulled back more layers of his electronic onion-ness to reveal a deeper, darker murphy that is still danceable and lovable and the world cannot help but sing his praises again. so, mr. murphy, if this is the last we’ll hear of you (i’m dubious, but nonetheless) – weerd. you done good.

crystal castles

i have been listening to their new album all month and it’s ridiculous and getting even more ridiculous as i’m wearing out my speakers with it. this album could have been a failure with all the concert canceling, madonna t-shirt controversy, and what nots. there was real concern of it being a hot mess. but fuck that. it’s a bloody brilliant noisy fuck you, i’m awesome, kind of album. i heart you crystal castles.

the veils

alright, i am sick of people not knowing who this band is. it’s been years and still, i mention their name, and i get blank stares. not ok. i saw them live for the second time in l.a. last night at the troubadour and they are too damn incredible to be virtually unknown. so here it is – do yourself a favor and get to know these brits. they released their third kick ass album last year and if they are in your town, do yourself another favor and go see them. hopefully, they’ll be one of your favorite bands soon. oh, and you’re welcome.

artist of the month – beach house

these baltimore natives have really done it this time. critically acclaimed across the board, teen dream is a home run if i’ve ever heard one.  i cannot stop listening. it’s a problem. it’s just too damn good. i am willing myself to listen to something else, but inevitably, it’s back to beach house. jump on board people.
