flashback of the week

depeche mode – violator – personal jesus

it’s 1989. this was the first single from the english boys’ seventh album which was released the following year. it is one of their most successful and recognizable tunes with it’s driving bass and complete badassness. they’ve released 12 albums to date, although violator remains their best selling album. i will always name them in my list of favorite bands of all time and this song in particular could be heralded as an anthem of mine.

explosions in the sky – take care, take care, take care – trembling hands

the texas boys are back with their sixth album this tuesday, oh yeah. they never seem to write a bad note and the new album is no different. the songs get to the “explosions”, so to speak, quicker than we are used to, but they are all still cinematic beauts, solidifying their place in music legend. www.explosionsinthesky.com

black light dinner party – older together

this project consists of 4 producers in three different cities: l.a., new york, and paris, working together on-line over the past two years to bring you their first single ever, a catchy and slick, electronic instant favorite. it’s a hell of a welcome onto the scene and i’m already wanting more tunes. happy religious weekend and kick up your heels. below is the accompanying video. www.blacklightdinnerparty.com

youth lagoon – the year of hibernation – cannons

this 22 year-old from boise, idaho is releasing his debut album this summer. this track from the forthcoming album is a lulling and airy gem. the other track he’s got floating around on the web is an earnest heartwrencher. the kid has got some major chops, so i’d be paying some serious attention to him this summer. youthlagoon.bandcamp.com

the one am radio – Heaven Is Attached By a Slender Thread – In a City Without Seasons

this l.a. project led by Hrishikesh Hirway just released their fourth album. it was inspired by late night walks in los angeles, so you insomniacs might relate. there are a few standouts on the dreamy and electronic album, this song being one of them. it’s a lovely tune and living in hell.a, i must say there are no seasons, and sometimes you do want more colorful foliage, so preach on hirway, preach on. www.myspace.com/theoneamradio

tom vek – leisure seizure – a chore

today’s song is in video form. it marks the return of one of my favorites artists evah who has been m.i.a for the last five years, britain’s tom vek. his new album (hoorah!) is out in june. tom plays the host of a t.v. show and the man does not disappoint. it’s a worthy return after half a decade. welcome back mr. vek. www.tomvek.tv

cassettes won’t listen – kevinspacey – the echoes

former hip hop businessman for definite jux jason drake is back with his third album this june. he flexes his sampling muscles on the new record and on this new track. this ain’t no hip hop, but it sure is some darn good electronic music and anything that references kevin spacey perks my ears up. cassetteswontlisten.com

we are enfant terrible - explicit pictures – filthy love

french trio we are enfant terrible released their debut album last week. it’s eclectic electro that’s full of wonderful blips and beeps meant to make you move. they used a nintendo gameboy as an instrument on this album, that’s right. this is one of their stand out tracks, gritty and begging for a dark warehouse dance floor, it’s one to keep for the weekend or help you with a some monday attitude. www.weareenfantterrible.com

javelin – canyon candy – cowpoke

this brooklyn duo are known for their remixes, but they are back with their second proper album today. it’s western themed and epic and a departure from their more danceable tunes. in short, it’s a winner by all accounts. get out your ten gallon hats and find a good campfire to roast a good something on a stick. www.myspace.com/hotjamzofjavelin

song of the day

handsome furs – sound kapital – what about us

the married duo are back with a new single from their forthcoming third album, sound kapital. this album was written entirely on the keyboards. i must say, i’ll miss his guitar, but he’s got some pseudo jarvis cocker moments on this track that make up for it. if there’s no more wolf parade, then this is more than a fair distraction. www.myspace.com/handsomefurs

generationals – actor-castor – ten-twenty-ten

this new orleans duo released their debut album not less than two months ago and it’s already worn out over here, particularly this bopping jewel. if you are in need of something sunny and infectious, need no more. this is a near perfect indie pop song and it’s been hogging my repeat button. generationals.com

song of the day

dawn golden & rosy cross -  blow – white sun

i featured chicago’s dexter tortoriello’s project last month. his debut ep dropped yesterday and it’s worth the 6 buckaroos. this tune is a woozy delight that makes use of some atonement inspired sampling and has the sweetest of endings. i’m a big fan of the twenty something and i’d expect fresh things from him in the near future. www.myspace.com/dawngoldenandrosycross
